Five Minutes Anyway

When motivation does not show up, this is the contract you sign with yourself.

Here is the rule that will change your life if you let it. When you do not feel like doing the thing, do five minutes of it anyway. Five. That is the whole agreement. Not the full workout. Not the perfect study session. Not the hour-long writing block. Five minutes. After that, you have full permission to quit. No guilt. No grudge. Walk away.

What you will discover, over and over again, is that you almost never quit. The hardest part of any work is starting it. Once your hands are moving, once your body is in the chair, once the page is open in front of you — momentum does the rest. Motivation is a liar. Motivation shows up after you start, not before. The five-minute rule is a trick to get past the only part that ever actually stops you.

Discipline is not about being a machine. It is not about white-knuckling your way through a life you secretly hate. Discipline is about being kind to the future version of you by making the smallest possible deal with the present version of you. Five minutes is a deal anyone can keep. And keeping small deals with yourself is exactly how you become the kind of person who keeps the big ones.

Today, pick one thing you have been avoiding. Set a timer for five minutes. Start. When the timer goes off, decide. Most days you will keep going. Some days you will stop, and that is fine — you still won the day, because you showed up. That is the only requirement.
